Greg Olson, of Weaverville, California led after the first two rounds at 5 under par by one stroke over Chris Johnson of Rancho Cordova at 5 under. Completing the final foursome were Dave Penso of Sacramento at 2 under and Patrick Henry of Elk Grove at 1 under. Brad Penfold, of Elk Grove, the defending 2004 Champion, was 5 back at even after 36 holes.

During the final round, many players made challenges to the lead after Greg Olson hooked his tee shot out of bounds on the tenth hole falling back to three under. Johnson quickly took advantage and took charge of the lead reaching four under after a birdie at 11. Olson then bogeyed 11 and 12 to fall out of contention at 1 under. Henry and Penso were steady all day staying within two of the lead. Meanwhile, Penfold, who had been as many as 7 back after falling to two over par after bogeying the par 3 fifth hole, suddenly caught fire with birdies at 6, 8, 9, 11, 14 and 17, finishing at 4 under par for the day and the tournament.

Just as Penfold was walking off the 18th green to the scorers table, the leader in the clubhouse with Johnson one back at 3 under par, Johnson pushed his drive into the trees right of the fairway almost in the rough of the tenth fairway. As many onlookers began to congratulate Penfold on defending his title, Johnson somehow found an opening and stuck a wedge over the trees 10 feet from the hole. On the 18th green, Olson made a nice 25 foot birdie putt to get back to even and 5th place while Penso made another routine par to finish at 2 under, in 4th place. Pat Henry then sank a nice 12 foot putt to finish one shy at 3 under par, only the third person, to go under par for the final day with Penfold's 68 and Ken Crawford's 69 posted early in the day. As many onlookers gathered around the 17th tee to watch Johnson putt, many of them competitors from earlier in the day like Dan Condie of Antelope, Peter Hackett and his caddie Mary Mulcahy of Sacramento, Peter Moren of Danville, Mike Murphy of Oakland, Kent Ichiho of Folsom, and Mike Montgomery of Roseville, Johnson lined up his 10 footer and wasted no time putting the ball into the center of the cup to force a playoff.

Minutes later, Penfold and Johnson teed it up at the 17th tee for the playoff. Penfold laid up to 135 yards with an iron and Johnson smashed a three wood to 80 yards. As Penfold put his second shot on, Johnson hit his lob wedge thin just short of the green. Penfold two putted and Johnson missed his par putt, granting Penfold his second straight California State Fair Masters title.
