Schrier and Knoll win at the Merced County Am
MERCED, CALIF. (July 17, 2011) – Sometimes, if not always, playing it safe is the surefire way to allow good things to happen. Just ask amateur.com member Teddy Schrier.
Schrier was in contention at the 60th Annual Merced County Amateur last week and hit his drive on the 18 hole deep into the trees. After contemplating the risk/reward of the heroic shot from the forest, he punched out to 95 yards and promptly knocked it stone dead from that point to make birdie and force a playoff with his playing partner, Troy Williams.
On the first hole of the playoff Schrier went for the short par-4 from the tee. His drive flew 300 yards, bounced on a cart path pin high and then ended up 70 yards from the hole in another fairway. A miraculous approach would leave him just five feet for birdie and the win, but his putt horseshoed out and the playoff would continue with pars for another two holes.
On the fourth playoff hole Schrier knocked is 190-yard tee shot to fifteen feet and holed the putt for the win.
“Overall I played well but it was an up and down day,” said Schrier. “I would miss a three-footer then I would make a birdie. It was just a strange round.”
Tucked pins made scoring difficult on the first day and the lack of red numbers proved it. A trio of players shot 72, the low score of the day. Schrier and Williams both carded 74 on day one and were paired together the following day where both posted 69 for a total of 74-69—143.
Nick Webb and Paul Smith tied for third with a total of 144
In the Senior Divison amateurgolf.com member Jim Knoll continued his winning ways by posting 72-72—144 to take the Senior Division by four shots over Conrad Nilmeier (73-75—148) and Jim Duncan (76-72—148). This is the fourth victory this year for Knoll who has carded wins at the NCGA Senior, the Antioch Master and Senior Best Ball and the Salinas City Amateur.
