New Mexico/West Texas Amateur: Condon Wins

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (July 24, 2011) - You'd think after posting an opening round 76 and being eight shots back, you'd pack it in early and just enjoy yourself.  Mix in the fact that most of the competition is half your age and it makes for a daunting final two days of the event.  Apparently, Greg Condon doesn't necessarily think like that.  Instead, the 49-year old from Monte Vista, Colo., posted back-to-back five-under par 67s to take the 2011 New Mexico-West Texas Amateur Championship by two shots.

While the usual suspects moved up and down the leaderboard all day Sunday at UNM Championship Golf Club, the steady Condon focused on fairways and greens and followed that up with a solid putting display to outpace the field.

"Well, I never expected it," Condon said.  "I wanted to use this week as just a warm-up for the Pacific Coast Championship next week.  And, it just sort of happened.  It was a lot of fun."

Known for very rarely making a mistake, Condon scraped it around off of the tee while staying out of trouble and wound up claiming the Championship thanks to the flat stick.

"I really have been hitting it poorly prior to this week," Condon said.  "I didn't even really hit it all that great his week either.  But I putted great.  I think I only had 27 of them today."

The putter allowed Condon to slowly move to the top of the leaderboard over the final two days of the event, and in the end finished two shots ahead of defending champion Daniel Medina, El Paso, Texas and Albuquerque's Sam Saunders who both finished at four-under for the Championship.
