WALNUT CREEK, CALIF.. (Sunday, August 14, 2011) - Standing on the 18th tee being one shot down, amateurgolf.com member Brent Booth knew he had to do something dramatic to capture a win at the Contra Costa County Amateur this past weekend. Normally a 240-yard second shot on a par-5 hole to three feet would fill the bill, but Bobby Bucey, the recent grad from Chico State, would have something to say about it.
"I hit my 240 yard approach to 3 feet while Bobby had an 8 footer for birdie that he knew he had to make, " explained Booth. "After rolling in his birdie putt, I made my eagle, leaving us tied at 6-under."
And on to the playoff they went.
Bucey's tee shot went left into the trees and he had to punch out to just short of the green. Booth went right off the tee and into the tall grass and was forced to play a provisonal ball. Booth then played his fourth shot to five feet and put the pressure on Bucey to get up and down for the win. Bucey's chip was a disappointing one, leaving him 12 feet and the honor. When he missed Booth knew he had another shot to extend the playoff.
"So I had a right to left curler to extend the playoff," said Booth. "I played a little too much break and it missed on the high side, so Bobby tapped in for the win. It was exciting to have a chance to extend given that I lost a ball in the playoff and still had a chance, but extremely disappointing."
Booth hopes for one better and maybe a little less drama in his next event where he will defend his title at the San Jose City Championship.
Tyler Archer finished in solo third with rounds of 73-72--145 while Patrick Wlazlo was fourth with scores of 73-74--147.
In the Senior division, Dale Bouguennec posted 68-67--137 to win by 4 strokes over Ron Johnson who fired 71-70--141 and Mark Miller with rounds of 72-69--141.
