North & South Senior: Simson wins his fourth
PINEHURST, N.C. (Aug 18, 2011) – With over 200 golf tiles already under his belt, Paul Simson took home his sixth North & South Amateur Championship title Thursday. Simson now has two Men’s and four Senior Men’s North & South titles.
Simson took the lead in round two of the 60th playing of the championship, with a round of even par on Course No. 8 after shooting one-under-par in round one. He went on to shoot a round of even par again on Pinehurst No. 2 in the final round to edge ahead of Charlotte’s Gary Brown (72-72-76) and Joe Fairey (74-74-72) of St. Matthews, SC who tied for second in the Open Division at 220.
Ken Highlander (70-75-76) led after round one with a two-under-par 70, but the tenth hole of Pinehurst No. 2 in the final round removed all hopes of the Edwardsville, IL resident garnering the lead. Highlander tied Bill Leonard of Kennesaw, GA, who scored the stellar low round on Thursday (76-76,69) for fourth with 221.
In the Super Senior Division, Jim Carley of Ormond Beach, FL defeated Joe Cantrell of Louisville, KY in a sudden death playoff. Carley and Cantrell were tied after the first round of the Championship, each scoring even par, but Carley’s three-under-par in round two gave him the clubhouse lead. Cantrell rallied with four birdies in the final round to give him the final round lead, putting him in the playoff with Carley for the title.
