MORGAN HILL, Calif. (Jan. 15, 2012) -- Alex Franklin of San Rafael climbed atop a crowded leaderboard on Sunday to capture the amateurgolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur by three strokes. After nine players broke 70 on Saturday, a tougher course and colder weather sent scores soaring on Sunday.

Franklin's rounds of 67-71 were good for a three-stroke victory over Michael Kim of Del Mar. Defending champion Max Homa posted rounds of 68-76 to finish in solo 6th.

Franklin is a Sophomore at College of Marin and is in search of a college golf team to play for. If he keeps shooting scores like he did at Coyote Creek, against a very stellar roster of California Division I and II players he won't be searching long.

It was Sunday's 71 in very windy, cold conditions, with tough pins that set him apart from the field.

"I putted really well on Saturday, but didn't hit it that great," said Franklin.

"Today I hit everything solid and straight. That was key with the way the wind was."

Indeed, scores ballooned in the tough conditions. The par-5 17th hole for instance saw saw some of the leading players make scores of 12, 10, and a 9 to dash their hopes down the stretch.

Franklin had two birdies, an eagle (On the 12th hole, after hitting the par-5 green in two and making a 50 foot bomb) and three bogeys. His Saturday 68 was bogey free.

In the Senior Division, Dan Bieber shot 72-76 to win by three over Mark Miller. Scott Carelli of Menlo Park took home the Net title (again, by three shots like the other two divisions) with a total of 141.

TOURNAMENT NOTES:

There were two holes-in-one during the tournament. (Where's that car when you need it?)

• Wes Sandroni had his ace Saturday on the Valley Course's 16th hole, where he used a 6 iron from 170 yards out and was able to watch it land 2 feet short and roll right in.

• The other one was Sunday on the 2nd hole of the Tournament Course by Nick Thomas who used a hybrid from 202 yards and was able to watch his ball land 15 feet short and roll in the hole as well. Both golfers used Titleist Pro V1x's.

ABOUT THE AGC Silicon Valley Amateur

>> 2024 TOUR PORTAL

The Silicon Valley Amateur is the first AmateurGolf.com tournament to have, on its past winner's list, a MAJOR champion. That would be Collin Morikawa, who won the 2016 title. Just over four years later, he won the PGA Championship just up the road at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Multiple PGA Tour star and Morikawa's fellow 2023 USA Ryder Cup team member Max Homa also won the Silicon Valley Amateur in 2011.

For 2024, the tournament is moving to a new venue -- Stanford University Golf Course. Tournament players will relish competing at a course normally reserved for university students and faculty. Please note that we will play on Monday and Tuesday, and expect this event will fill very quickly.
