Donald Constable
NAPLES, Fla. (April 15, 2012) -- Donald Constable withstood a handful of valiant final-round surges to take home the 2012 Terra Cotta Invitational championship at Naples National.
Constable, who hails from Deephaven, Minn., followed a first-round 69 with a solid 71 in Saturday's second round. He shot 72 Sunday, closing at 212 --- one shot better than Tae Wan Lee of Korea, Jim Liu of Smithtown, NY and Mike Miller of Brewster, NY, who all tied for second place.
Miller made up the most ground Sunday, shooting a final-round 70. Save for Jarryd Dillas' 69, Miller had the low round Sunday. Dillas, of Bermuda, was in a tie for 10th following the final round.
Matt NeSmith of N. Augusta, SC, one of the names to watch heading into the event, finished alone in fifth place after a solid weekend that included a Saturday 73 sandwiched by 71s on Friday and Sunday.
Chelso Barret of Keene, NH, surged with a final-round 70 to join two of the contenders in sixth place. Barrett, of course, finished tied with second-round leader Juan Carlos Benitez of Mexico and first-round leader Curtis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla. Benitez faltered Sunday, struggling to a 78 after rounds of 69 and 70 got him into the lead. Thompson fired the low round of the tournament Friday (67) but struggled Saturday with a 77. He bounced back Sunday with a 73 but it wasn't enough to get back in contention.
