BANDON, Oregon (May 2, 2012) -- Record low scores were posted by winning teams in two of three divisions in the 11th Annual amateurgolf.com Two Man Links Championship at Bandon Dunes.
In the Championship Division, the "Pete and Pete" team of 40-year friends Pete Wlodkowski and Pete Davison posted 10-over par 295 from the black tees to edge a surging father son team of Scott and Josh Hanosh by a single shot.
Playing in front of the leaders at Bandon Dunes, the Hanosh team posted 3-under 69 while Wlodkowski and Davison struggled to a 76 at Bandon Dunes, the resort's first course, after a 71 at Old Macdonald in the third round put them within 8 of the lead.
Wlodkowski and Davison's caddie Nevin Ellenberger, it should be noted, is now the two-time defending champion caddie, having carried the bag for Erik Hallgrimson and Wayne McClintock in their 2011 victory, get this, with exactly the same 72-hole total.
The Southern California team of Tom McKee and Scott Blanchard (69 at Bandon Dunes) grabbed third place.
SENIOR DIVISION:
Gary Wing and David Ujihara of the Los Angeles area broke the Senior 72-hole record with a 14-under total for four rounds from the green tees (still plenty of golf at all four courses).
Wing couldn't say enough about his partner, and was last seen happily loading all of their bags into the car after Ujihara capped a two eagle day with a 3 on the par-5 18th at Bandon Dunes.
"He just dropped an eagle bomb on 18, and I was along to document the event," joked Wing.
Two-time past champions and 8 year players Sherman Haggerty and Ben Whipple of the Sacramento, California area took second.
NET DIVISION RECAP:
David DeBerry and Chad Clark, M.D. of Southern California broke the 72-hole tournament record in the Net Division with a 37-under 248 total. Clark, a 14 handicapper -- who credited caddy Kevin Jurkowski with saving the team at least 5 shots a day -- tied his career low round on Wednesday at Bandon Dunes with an 80.
"Kevin literally pulled a [wrong] club out of our hands a couple of times and wouldn't let us hit it," said Clark.
Note to players that carried their own bags: Caddies are worth way more than the daily rate, if you're willing to listen...
Twin brothers Keith and Randall Schwartz of Northern California (another team of many-year veterans of this event) won a card playoff for second place over Rick Underman and Jim Welte at 20-under 265. Brothers Mike and Steve Suttman tied for 4th with long-hitting U.S. Army intelligence specialist Gary Beene and his uncle Howard Gregersen, at 19-under 266.
After driving several greens during the week, Beene drove over the 8th and 14th greens at Bandon Dunes on Wednesday. But when asked what happened on the drivable 16th, Beene quipped "I tried to cut that one, but it was last seen heading towards Hawaii."
SPECIAL THANKS:
Amateurgolf.com thanks the entire staff at Bandon Dunes, and tournament participants (some of whom could be in the movie 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles') who did whatever it took to visit America's golf mecca. If you haven't been....what are you waiting for?
