HAMDEN, Conn. (May 3, 2012) -- Despite a furious back nine rally by the CSGA’s Challenge Cup team of fourteen amateurs, the Connecticut Section PGA professionals prevailed by a narrow 32.5-30.5 margin to capture the 41st annual Julius Boros Challenge Cup at New Haven Country Club on Thursday, May 3.
The CSGA side was looking for their fourth straight victory in the event, having captured the cup in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The competition was played at individual and four-ball match play simultaneously, with one point awarded for each nine, and one point awarded for the full eighteen holes. The professionals jumped out to a commanding eight-point lead, 14.5-6.5, through the first nine, only to have the amateurs claw back to tie the competition at 27 points each.
The final match of the day pitting the section team of Tony Kelley and Fran Marrello against CSGA representatives Bill Hermanson and Dave Szewzcul settled the final score with Kelly and Marrello claiming a 2-point margin, 5.5-3.5.
