McCoy/Elliot win Iowa Four-Ball Championship
PELLA, Iowa (May 27, 2012) -- “It goes to
show you should never give up”.
That was the quote from Mike McCoy while he
and partner Gene Elliott were hitting practice
putts as the team of Bret Taylor and J.D.
Anderson were walking off their final hole of
regulation on Saturday at the IGA Four-Ball
Championship at Bos Landen in Pella.
McCoy and Elliott, two shots back heading into
the final day, birdied three of the final six holes
to finish at 11-under 133. At the time they
finished they were a shot behind Taylor and
Anderson, who had one hole remaining.
Unfortunately a bogey at the last brought
them down to 11-under and into a playoff.
On the 3rd playoff hole McCoy rolled in a 15
foot birdie putt while Anderson and Taylor both
had 12 feet to negotiate for their own birdies.
Both putts skimmed the edge but didn’t fall,
leaving McCoy and Elliott as champions.
Things did not look good early in the final
round for the Senior Division team of Jim Butler
and Dan Dalziel. In the final pairing following
their opening round 67 the two made bogey on
the first hole and then a double bogey on two.
They were able to settle themselves by making
five straight pars and then a birdie on the 8th
hole got them going.
They turned in two-over 38 and, after a par at
the tenth, Dalziel holed 110 yard shot at the
par-5 11th for eagle. After that, Dalziel turned
it over to his partner. Butler birdied 12, 13, 16
and the 18th to post a final round 69 and a
total of 8-under 136.
The birdie on the final hole was crucial as
Scott Carnes and Gary Engle closed with a
final round 68 to finish at 7-under 137,
ultimately one shot too many.
