Navarro takes Modesto City in playoff

MODESTO, Calif. (June 10, 2012) -- Andre Navarro did not realize that his 50-foot putt on Creekside's 18th green had to drop for a playoff.
But Stockton's Josh Stone, standing not far away, did.
Navarro's downhill slider trundled to the left, somehow caught the right edge and curled into the cup for the clutch birdie as his friends cheered. One playoff birdie later, the Cal State Stanislaus senior from Denair edged Stone and took home the spoils Sunday as the champion of the 30th Modesto City Championship.
"I thought I had to hole the approach shot (at 18). When I got up there, I accepted the fact the tournament was over," Navarro said. "After I made it, one of my friends said, 'Get ready for a playoff.' "
Meanwhile at Dryden Park, Katy (Joslin) Bertucci of Modesto double-teamed the women's field — she's seven months pregnant — for her third City title. The 1999 Women's State Amateur finalist held on for a one-stroke win over Downey High graduate Laura Arellano.
"I just swing my swing and it still works. Baby goes for a ride on the shots," Bertucci said. "We'll put it in the baby book."
Peter Moren of Danville won the men's senior championship flight.
