SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (July 28, 2012) -- Aiming for a repeat championship, Chatsworth resident and San Diego State golfer, James Holley, took a commanding lead in the first round of the Simi Valley City Championship on Saturday. Shooting a 7 under par score of 64, Holley has a 5 shot lead over Camarillo’s JohnnyRuiz, and a 6 shot lead over 5 other golfers.
In the A flight, Raffi Bashian (Sherman Oaks) leads the gross score competition by one stroke, with a score of 4 over par 75, leading Todd Mayne (Malibu), who shot 76. In the net competition, Bashian and Mayne are tied for the lead at net 69, followed by 3 golfers just two strokes off the pace.
The B flight gross score leader is christopher Nayve of San Diego, with an 8 over par 79, followed by Stephen Canterbury (Moorpark) and Richard Trejo (South Gate), tied at 80. The B flight net score leaders after the first round, tied at net 65, are Canterbury, Trejo and ArthurChang (Simi Valley).
After the first round, the Senior Championship flight leaders are James Cortes (Newhall) at par 71, followed by Bret Mackay of Valencia, shooting 72, and Moorparks’ Mark Monreal with a score of 73.
The Senior A flight gross competition is led by John Larsen (Woodland Hills), with a score of 4 over par 75, just one stroke ahead of Ross Geller (Simi Valley) who shot 76 in Saturday’s round. Net competition leaders are Al Mendenhall (Canoga Park), carding a net 65 and Larsen, whose net score totaled 67.
The City Championship concludes on Sunday at Simi Hills Golf Course. This premier city championship is celebrating its 31st year of competition. Spectators are welcome to follow the competition at the course. Play resumes at 6:20 am, with the championship flight starting at11:15 am.
