Nelson wins CC of Mobile Labor Day Invitational
MOBILE, Ala. (Sept. 4, 2012) -- Mobile's Robert Nelson produced a steady round of 3-under-par 68 in Monday's final round of the 78th Labor Day Invitational to win the tournament title by three shots over second-round leader Steve Wilson of Ocean Spring, Miss.
Nelson carried a three-shot lead to the final hole and to cap the victory dropped a 12-foot putt for par to close out the tournament.
"I shot 34-34, which is 1 under and 2 under out here,'' Nelson said. "I had one bogey on the front and no bogeys on the back. When you're coming down the stretch and you don't have any bogeys and you're able to throw a couple of birdies in there, that's pretty solid. I hit a lot of fairways when I needed to and a lot of greens when I needed to. I hit two of the par 5s in two and I was able to two-putt both of them. That's half my birdies right there. That helped. All in all, it was a good solid round.''
In Sunday's second round, Nelson made the turn at 4 over for the day and was struggling, but he erased the bad start with four straight birdies to start the back nine and finished the day with an even par round. He said the momentum he gained from that recovery played a big factor in his final round of play.
"That helped a lot because I got my bad holes and bad nine out of the way,'' he said. "I left here feeling good (on Sunday). If it had been reversed, four birdies and finish with four bogeys, I would have left here feeling bad.''
