FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (Sept. 4, 2012) -- In the end, it was the weather and not the golf that was the most popular topic following the first day of competition at the 2012 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship which is being held this week at Framingham Country Club.
Due to heavy bands of precipitation that found the Metrowest region and forced a two-hour suspension of play, the first round was not completed as scheduled on Tuesday. Play was officially suspended at 6:55 p.m. due to darkness.
As a result, the competitors who did not finish 18 holes on Tuesday will return on Wednesday to complete their first round of play. The second round will commence immediately following the conclusion of that first round on Wednesday morning.
Barring any additional weather delays, the plan is for the second round to be completed on Wednesday and the field will be cut to the low 30 scorers and ties or anyone within 5 strokes of the lead. Only those competitors will return to Framingham Country Club on Thursday for the third and final round of play.
"It is certainly not an ideal situation, but we are grateful for the hard work of [golf course superintendent] Pat Daly and his staff who worked tirelessly to make the course playable today," said Jesse Menachem, the MGA's director of rules & competition. "As we do with all events, our primary goal is to complete the stipulated number of rounds so that a champion can be crowned. We will do whatever we can to make that happen here this week."
