Georgia leads Carpet Capital Collegiate
ROCKY FACE, Georgia (Sept. 7, 2012) -- Georgia posted a 10-under-par 278 in the first round and took a six-stroke lead over top-ranked Alabama (284, -4), while LSU shot 286 (-2) and Wake Forest 288 (E). Auburn was in fifth place at 289 (+1), while North Florida and North Carolina were tied for sixth place at 291 (+3).
Seven teams in the 15-team field are ranked in the pre-season top 25 in Golf World magazine.
The Bulldogs' T.J. Mitchell took the first-round lead after firing a 7-under-par 65, followed by Alabama's Bobby Wyatt (67), Auburn's Niclas Carlsson (68) and Georgia's Lee McCoy (68). South Carolina's Dykes Harbin, North Carolina's Michael McGowan and Texas' Brandon Stone are tied for fifth place with 69s.
Host Georgia Tech's golf team struggled from the top to bottom of its lineup Friday with an opening round 301, 13 shots over par and in last place at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.

The 7,012-yard, par-72 layout was designed by
Tom Fazio and is near Dalton, Ga., just over 90
miles north of the Georgia Tech campus. The
host Yellow Jackets have been the institutional
host of this event since its inception in 1989. The
field
typically maintains a predominantly ACC and
SEC flavor, with other nearby schools
participating, as well.
