LEAWOOD, Kan. (Oct. 15,2012) -- On a picturesque fall day, the top amateur players in Kansas City took to Leawood South Country Club in search of the Kansas City Masters title. Brett Iliff was the first player off the tee this morning at 8:30 a.m. and quickly birdied the first hole. That birdie set the tone for a first round 68 to lead all players in the Open division of the KC Masters. The lead is a slim one stroke over the current Bushnell Points list leader and reigning KC Amateur Champion, Steve Groom. Groom carded seven birdies on the day, but a costly double bogey on the difficult par 4 11th hole left him settling for a first round 69.

Also near the lead are two Kansas City stalwarts, Bryan Norton and Kris Casburn. Norton is the KC Masters defending champion and Casburn is no stranger to KCGA titles. Both players enter round two three shots back after carding first round 72s.

In the Senior division, Charlie Schorgl leads all players with an even par round 71. Schorgl had sixteen pars, a birdie and a bogey on his very consistent scorecard today. He leads reigning KC Senior Amateur Champion Tom Leonard by one shot going into tomorrow’s final round.

Round two begins tomorrow morning at Leawood South C.C. at 8:30 a.m.
