UCLA takes Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle

SAN MARTIN, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2012) -- The UCLA men's golf team won the 2012 Gifford Collegiate Championship Wednesday at the CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif.
The Bruins won by eight shots over Stanford after posting a score of 363 (+8) in the final round. UCLA's 54-hole total of 1,062 was three-under par; Stanford came in at 1,070 (+5) following a round of 362 (+7) on Wednesday. The victory was the Bruins' first stroke play title of the season and their second straight after winning last week's match play Stanford Classic at Cypress Point. The Bruins also captured their fourth GCC crown in the tournament's eight-year history.
Tennessee's Rick Lamb fired a final round 70 (-1) to capture first place and the individual crown with a three-round score of 207 (-6).
USC placed third at 1,082 (+17), Tennessee finished fourth at 1,085 (+20) and Northwestern captured fifth place at 1,093 (+28). The format was six-count-five scoring.
Individually, senior Pontus Widegren led the Bruins with a fourth-place finish, posting a final round 73 (+2) for a 54-hole total of 210 (-3). Freshman Lorens Chan tied for fifth place at 211 (-2) following his round of 72 (+1) and sophomore Manav Shah placed seventh at 212 (-1) after an even par round of 71 on Wednesday. Sophomore Matt Pinizzotto tied for 16th at 217 (+4) after posting a score of 73 (+2). Freshman Jonathan Garrick tied for 20th at 218 (+5) following today's 74 (+3) and senior Pedro Figueiredo carded a 75 (+4) to finish at six-over 219.
Five other Bruin players competed as individuals and two placed in the Top 20: sophomore Preston Valder finished eighth at even par 213 following a final round score of 74 (+3) and sophomore Jay Hwang tied for 13th 216 (+3) after carding a score of 77 (+6). Freshman Jake Knapp tied for 49th at 224 (+11) after a round of 74 (+3). Tied for 61st were freshmen Reilly McMahon and Aaron Kunitomo at 232 (+19).
