South Beach Int'l Am: Hernandez holds early lead
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 18, 2012) -- The first round of the South Beach International Amateur saw one of the world’s strongest fields prove their worth under perfect scoring conditions at Miami Beach and Normandy Shores Golf Clubs.
Juan Pablo Hernandez of Mexico City, Mexico and the University of Arizona took advantage of the perfect conditions at Normandy Shores with a blistering five under par 65 to take a one shot lead over Tommy Mou of Taiwan. Mou, a member of the University of Florida golf team fired the low round of the day at Miami Beach Golf Club with a 5 under par 66.
Hernandez’s round broke the SBIA record at Normandy Shores by one shot and Mou’s 66 bested the SBIA Miami Beach record by two shots. Clemson player Billy Kennerly of Alpharetta, GA striped a 4 under par 66 at Normandy Shores to put himself in a great position entering round two.
Jorge Garcia, an American Heritage (FL) HS sophomore from Venezuala and University of Florida commit is at 4 under par after shooting 67 at Miami Beach Golf Club. High school teammateand fellow sophomore, fellow Florida commit and top 10 2011 SBIA finisher Kristian Caparros of Hollywood, FL was in at even par 71. American Heritage senior and Louisville commit Robert Giebel of Pembroke Pines fired a one over par 72 to round out the very impressive showing by the local high school.
TCU player Eli Cole of Beverly Hills, CA and Oklahoma State golfer Brad Gehl of Carmel, IN both fired 67’s (-3) at Normandy Shores. In all, 62 players are at even par or better going into round two when similar conditions are expected to allow for low scoring. Perfect weather plus one of the world’s most talented amateur fields will see the cut come in much lower than last year’s 11 over par. Second round play starts at 7:30am at Both Normandy Shores and Miami Beach Golf Clubs tomorrow.
