Daniel Berger captures early lead at Dixie Amateur
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (Dec. 18, 2012) — Florida State sophomore Daniel Berger and defending champion Curtis Thompson put on quite a show Tuesday in the first round of the 82nd Dixie Amateur taking place on three ClubLink courses.
Playing on the 7,086-yard Heron Bay Golf Club under calm conditions, Berger from Jupiter, Fla., recorded 10 birdies and a lone bogey to take a three-shot lead over his playing partner and local resident Thompson, a sophomore at LSU, who had six birdies and no bogeys for a six-under 66.
Jason Roets of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., and Hunter O’Mahoney from Tequesta, Fla., were tied for third after opening-round 67s. Nine other golfers were another stroke back at 4-under par.
The field of 259 golfers is also playing the 6,808-yard Cypress course at Palm Aire Country Club and the West course at Woodlands Country Club at 6,825 yards. The cut will take place after the third round of the 72-hole event.
