RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (March 4, 2013) -- The duo of Brent Brockermeyer (pictured) and Dick Engel was the only group to shoot under par Monday, as the SCGA Foursomes Championship began with a tough test at Red Hill CC.
Surviving a rough patch that included a back-to-back double bogey and bogey, the team managed four birdies and no other trouble spots to take the lead at 1-under par halfway through the first championship of the year.
Also putting together solid rounds were a couple of past champions, who will be looking to reclaim their title with a come-from-behind victory when the event returns to action Tuesday. Don DuBois and Jeff Wilson, who partnered for the win in 2009, sit just one stroke behind the leaders at even par. Also carding an even par round were Jerry Chang and Jim Chang of Los Angeles and San Marino, respectively.
Rounding out the top five in the leaderboard were the teams of John Kollus and Gary Robinson and Kevin Marsh and John Pate, who have won the Foursomes title individually, but never as a pair. Marsh won with Joe Sanders in 2010 while John Pate won with Tim Hogarth in 2004 and 2005. Hogarth, playing with John Levitt of Covina, Calif., sits T13 after the first round of play after a Monday score of 5-over par.
Defending Champions Mark Miller and Dan Sullivan also find themselves T13 after the opening round of action.
Prior to the start of play, the majority of participants signed the SCGA's Pace of Play Pledge, which encourages golfers to remain aware of their pace of play whether it be in a tournament setting or during a casual round of golf. Coupled with a new SCGA Tournament Pace of Play Policy, the affects were seen, as almost every group finished their round in under four hours.
