Jim Lehman wins Society of Seniors Spring Classic
Jim Lehman
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 8, 2013) -- With steady, rock-solid rounds of 73-72-73, Jim Lehman celebrated his first SOS event with a two shot victory over Michael Occi. Occi carded a three under par 69-second round to place him in a final round head to head battle with Lehman and first round leader Pete Allen. Occi finished at 220 while Allen finished at 222.
Lehman, the brother of 1996 British Open Champion Tom Lehman, battled fierce winds during the second round, and chilly temperatures for the final round for the win. The Ironhorse CC course was a great test for the full field of 96.
In the Super Senior division, perennial contender and past SOS Champion Ted Smith added a tournament low 65 in the second round to give him a six shot cushion going to the final round. Smith stumbled a bit in the final, posting a 75 for 213. Charles Bagby of nearby Hobe Sound, making a rare SOS appearance, found himself in sole possession of second place at 215. Pat Vincelli was third with 216.
In the Grand Masters division SOS all time leading money leader Claud Johnston added yet another trophy to his collection with rounds of 69-72-77. Johnston’s 218 total was good for a 12 shot victory over Dick McClear (230) and a 14 shot victory over Richard Smith (232). Johnston opened the event with a superb 3-under par 69, and he never looked back.
