Georgia Super Senior: Don Marsh takes early lead
ATLANTA, Ga. (April 3, 2013) --- Don Marsh of Johns Creek was the only player to shoot under par, carding a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the Georgia Super Senior Championship, taking place at Piedmont Driving Club, April 2-3. First-flight competitor Stephen Schwartz of Savannah sits two strokes back at even par, while defending champion Dick Van Leuvan of Roswell and Jim Kamis of Marietta are tied for third at 74.
Marsh holds a two-stroke advantage, but for one blemish it could have been even more. Starting on No. 10 today, Marsh recorded four birdies (holes 15, 17, 2 and 7) with no mistakes until the final, 337-yard ninth hole, which he double-bogeyed.
Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are GSGA members and age 65 or older as of today. The full field of 144 players was divided into 11 flights by handicap index.
The final round gets underway at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. Marsh will tee off with two past champions in this event, Van Leuvan and three-time champion Spencer Sappington of Milton, at 2:10 p.m. off No. 1.
