TUCSON, Arizona (May 23, 2013) - Corky
Nelson
of Dallas finished 54 holes at 1-over par, 217
to
win the 14th Trans-Miss Senior Championship
by one shot over Cyrus Whitney of Oro Valley,
Ariz. Nelson, 68, shot rounds of 73-73-71 to
take home his first Trans-Miss Senior title.
Conducted by the Trans-Mississippi Golf
Association, the Senior Championship featured
78 players from 14 states. The par-72 North
Course at The Gallery GC played 6,557 yards
for
the Senior division and 6,073 yards for the
Super Senior and Legends divisions.
Larry Walsh of Mountain City, Texas won the
Super Senior division on the third playoff hole.
He and Michael Mahoney finished regulation
tied
at 222. The playoff started on hole #18 with
both players making birdie. They went back
hole #18 a second time where both made par.
The playoff then moved to the par-4, 10th
hole.
Walsh hit his approach shot close and
converted
the birdie opportunity to clinch the victory.
Tom Brown of La Jolla, Cali. won the Legends
division for players 75 and over. Brown, 78,
fired rounds of 79-81-82 to win by 18 shots.
Now in its third year as a standalone event,
the
Trans-Miss Senior Championship attracts some
of the top senior golfers west of the
Mississippi.
Past champions include Chris Maletis, Chip
Lutz
and Billy Clagett. The 2014 Trans-Miss Senior
Championship is scheduled for May 20-22 at
Houston CC in Houston, Texas.

The championship will be contested over 54 holes
of individual stroke play with three divisions:
Senior
(55+, max
handicap 6.0), Super Senior
(65+, max handicap 10.0) and Legends (70+, max
handicap
12.0).
Must be a
member
of
Trans-Mississippi Golf Association member
club
(players may make an individual contribution of
$100
minimum to the Turf Scholarship Fund as part of the
entry process, in lieu of club membership).
