Hornblower Memorial: Hadges wins in playoff
John Hadges
PLYMOUTH, Mass. (June 1, 2013) — Despite firing a final-round 73, John Hadges fell into a sudden-death playoff with first-round leader Doug Clapp, defeating him on the second hole to win the 49th Annual Hornblower Memorial Golf Tournament.
Clapp made no birdies en route to a final-round 75 — 10 shots higher than his 65 a day earlier.
Defending champion Colin Brennan took solo second place after firing the best final round in the field — 67.
An underrated event on the national scale, but a big event for top amateurs in Massachusetts and New England, the Hornblower was in its 49th year. The event is named for the club's 'benefactor' Henry Hornblower, who collaborated with the then Pilgrim Hotel to create what is now Plymouth Country Club.
Hadges, a longtime elite player among New England mid-amateurs, recently won the Norfolk County Classic for a third time.
