AIKEN, S.C. (June 5, 2013) -- The Palmetto Amateur field annually showcases some of the best established mid-amateurs and up-and-coming collegiate golfers in the south.
After Round 1 of the 2013 event on Wednesday, it's clear the field is hoping to continue growing the field's elite stature.
A total of 13 players are under par after the first round of play at Palmetto Golf Club with Davin White leading the way.
White, a rising Georgia State star, fired an opening-round 5-under 65 and leads all players entering the second 18 of the 72-hole event that runs through Saturday.
Ryan Ebner sits one shot back in fourth place while Sean Kelly is third after a first-round 67.
A group of three players, including highly-ranked junior Cody Proveaux, is at 20under.
LSU junior and former Dixie Amateur winner Curtis Thompson and mid-amateur Walker Cup hopeful Todd White sit tied for seventh, four shots back of White at 1-under.
The 72-hole stroke play event is held on a classic Alister MacKenzie design. The field of 84 is selected from applicants based on handicap, participation in amateur golf events and competitive record in previous Palmetto Amateurs and other amateur tournaments.
The field is one of the strongest in this, the early portion of the summer schedule.
Eric Hallberg, son of Champions Tour star Gary Hallberg, is at even par.
Cal red shirt freshman and Alameda Commuters champion Pace Johnson is six shots back, tied for 20th alongside top North Carolina mid-am Matt Crenshaw.
Former PGA Tour player and reinstated amateur John Engler is also in a tie for 20th.
Austin Langdale, a Clemson commit and recent Azalea Invitational winner is seven shots back at 2-over.
Amateurgolf.com will continue to post round-by-round results from the Palmetto Amateur, concluding with final-round coverage on Saturday.
