The tournament was founded in 2003, coinciding with the grand opening of the Metropolitan Golf Links, on the site of the old Lew Galbraith Golf Course.
Mark Hill won the Inaugural event in 2003, with a course record setting round of 66 in the final round providing a 7 shot cushion. (Hill's record has since been broken) The strong field encouraged the NCGA to increase the points value for the event to the 75 point level.
