Oakland, California (October 30, 2005) -- Final results from the Metropolitan
Amateur are now in, and the competition was keen once again.
Matt Marshall of Los Gatos followed his wonderful first round 66 with a 72
to win the Championship by 1 over Chris Jensen, while Frank Abbott fired even
par to win the Senior division and Shane Davis (who holed out from 140 yards
for eagle at No. 18 in round one) shot 67 on Sunday for a 12-under-par net total
of 132 and a Net victory he called his "biggest ever."
Marshall faced heavy pressure all day on Sunday from Chris Jensen, and the players
were tied heading into No. 16. It was there that Marshall hit the two shots
that likely won him the tournament.
After he hit a ball he later called "mud covered" from the rough
on the short par-4 to well over the green to the right on his second shot, Marshall
faced a shot that was easily a '10' on the degree-of-difficulty scale -- blind, uphill, from a whispy lie in the rough with no green to work with and a bush thrown in for good
measure.
Marshall executed a perfect full-swing flop shot to 12 feet and made the putt.
Just another ho-hum par, which obviously fired up the small in stature but long
in distance player for the par-5 seventeenth. Marshall pounded a drive down
the middle there, and followed it with a 3-iron to 20 feet and a two putt birdie.
When Jensen's long iron shot found the hazard, he made bogey and allowed Marshall
to enjoy a two shot lead on the 18th tee. Despite a bogey from over the green
on No. 18, Marshall was able to secure the victory by 1 when Jensen's 20 foot
birdie try failed to drop.
Shane Davis had an easier time in securing his Net Division title, as he was
able to rely on a "one shot at a time" approach to follow his first
round 65 with a net 67 on Sunday in one of the most consistent Net Division
wins in recent amateurgolf.com events. He'll be back for more, after discovering
tournament golf only recently.
And score another victory for software consultant Frank Abbott of Napa. Abbott
fired an even par total of 144 for the weekend to edge realtor Tom Lyons by
three strokes for the Senior Title.
Thanks to Metropolitan Golf Links for hosting our 3rd annual tournament and
to all staff and players for participating.
