San Diego City: Meth wins in playoff
By Glae Thien, Union-Tribune
For two years, Bryon Meth sensed his golf game was improving, but he went without the reward of a tournament victory.
It finally came for the Patrick Henry High alum on Sunday, as he prevailed in a one-hole playoff over Arcadia’s Bryan Shin for the San Diego City Amateur championship at Torrey Pines South.
Meth clinched the title with a four-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole after starting the day tied for third place at three shots off the lead. He shot a 2-under-par 70 for a three-round total of 211 to tie with Shin, who had a 71 to move up from two shots back in second.
“It feels good to be back in the winner’s circle,” said Meth, a junior at the University of Pacific. “It’s a testament to all of the work that I’ve put in. I’ve seen Top 10s and Top 5s, and now this is really nice, especially in my hometown.”
Meth moved into contention on Saturday at Torrey Pines North with a 68 to match the low round of the tournament, which began on Friday at Balboa Park. He started the final round with six straight pars in the leading foursome before moving ahead with three straight birdies.
