Weems, Foth take Heart of America Four-Ball
LOCH LLOYD, MO — The team of Josh Weems and Jackson Foth finally have their Heart of America Championship. Weems has been in the final match the past three years and paired with Foth to finish just one match shy of taking last year’s Heart title. This year would prove to be their year as they defeated the Topeka based team of Brian Walker and Drew Judd 6 and 5 in the thirty-six hole final.

All week long the formidable duo of Foth and Weems would find themselves down early in matches before rallying to eventually advance.

In both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches, Weems and Foth would fall two down early and both times came roaring back with a scoring barrage. Perhaps their biggest scare of the week came against the team of Evan Monheiser and Joe Migdal who led 2 up through nine holes. Not to be denied, Foth and Weems would fire a back nine (-7) 29 to finish 1 up and advance to the final match.

In the final match, Weems and Foth would take an early lead going birdie, par, par, eagle to start 3 up after four holes. They would never look back in the opening eighteen and finished the morning session with a 9 up lead.

After the morning break Judd and Walker would rally with birdies on the 19th, 20th and 22nd holes to cut the deficit to a more manageable six hole deficit. However, the lead would prove too big to surmount and misplayed tee balls at the par three 13th would lead to bogeys for Judd and Walker and a 6 & 5 victory for Weems and Foth.

“I just really like to play aggressive,” said Weems when asked about his great Heart of America play. ”There is something about this format that just suits my game. Jackson and I both make a lot of birdies, so we are a good fit.”Foth has had an excellent year in KCGA competitions finishing as a semifinalist in the KCGA Match Play and finished in a tie for 14th at the Watson Challenge. He now heads back into the collegiate season at the University of Kansas with a KCGA victory under his belt.

In the Senior Division, Mark Addington and Tom Leonard defeated Jerry Watulavich and Karl Elbrecht 1 up after a scrappy 18 hole final in which the lead bounced back and forth early. Addington and Leonard earned the championship title after beating the pre-tournament favorite and stroke play medalist team of Steve Groom and Andy Smith in the semi-finals.

In the “more experienced” division final, it appeared one of the teams would birdie every hole as one of the two teams birdied each of the opening four holes. The match would turn on the par three eleventh and par four fourteenth holes as Watulavich and Elbrecht’s par putts would slide by and return the match to all square. Leonard and Addington would go 1 up after Watulavich and Elbrecht failed to make par on the difficult par four 16th hole. Leonard and Addington would hold onto the 1 up lead for the remainder of the match.

Congratulations to the 2013 Heart of America Four-Ball Champions Josh Weems and Jackson Foth as well as the Senior Champions Mark Addington and Tom Leonard.
