Northeast Amateur: Jolly extends lead in Round 2
Stewart Jolly
RUMFORD, R.I. (June 19, 2014) -- The wind
died down and rain softened the greens
but scoring remained at a premium Thursday in
the second round of action at the
2014 Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett
Country Club.
LSU's Stewart Jolly fired a second straight 2-
under 67 and extended his lead to three
shots over one of the summer circuit's best
fields.
Jolly, a U.S. Palmer Cup team member, broke
through with the round of the day on
Wednesday in windy conditions. On Thursday,
he kept pace with some improved
scoring under better conditions but with rather
tricky pins.
Starting on No. 10, Jolly went out in 2-under
33 thanks to consecutive birdies on
Nos. 13 and 14 -- both par 4s.
He holds a three-shot lead over recent Mercer
graduate Hans Reimers, who followed
his opening-round 68 with an even-par 69 on
Thursday.
Kurt Kitayama of UNLV and Georgia Tech's
Seth Reeves are tied for third at even par
for the tournament while four players, including
Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge,
sit just five shots off the pace and tied for
fifth place.
Five more players, including recent
Sunnehanna Amateur champion Will Murphy of
South Carolina, and reigning U.S. Junior
champion Scott Sheffler are tied for ninth
place at 2-over.
Scheffler shot 2-under 67 Thursday while
Murphy carded a 1-under 68 despite a
double-bogey on his final hole.
Mid-amateur Patrick Christovich, who recently
won the Coleman Invitational, shot the
round of the day -- and tournament so far --
with a 3-under 66 to move into a tie
for 14th place.
