Oregon Public Links: Arey, Riede crowned champs
Corvallis, Ore. (July 13, 2014) – Hogan Arey (Corvallis, Ore.) and Kayla
Riede (Olivehurst, Calif.) were crowned champions of the 17th Oregon
Public Links Championship on Sunday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in
Corvallis, Ore.
A myriad of thunder storms caused a three hour delay during the final
round of the Oregon Public Links Championship. Play began relatively
easy at 7:30 AM but a brief thunder storm caused a half-hour delay at
8 AM. After getting players back on the course, another more fierce
succession of thunder storms stopped play for around two and a half
hours.
While the last group of women were able to tee off before play was
suspended, the Men’s Championship Division was never able to play on
Sunday. Because there was no way to get the Men’s Championship
Division back with enough time to finish their rounds, their final round
was canceled and it was reverted to an 18-hole championship. Hogan
Arey’s first round score of 66 (-6) was good enough to give him a one
stroke victory.
The Women’s Division was able to get back on the golf course and
play was resumed a little after 1:30 PM. Riede never missed a beat
when play was resumed. She made birdie on the par-4 second hole
and was good enough to outlast a few charges from other fellow
competitors to easily win by four strokes over the rest of the field.
Riede’s dominating performance was met with high winds as she played
her final round at 1-under par 35-36-71. Sunday capped off a 36-hole
total of 5-under par 68-71 – 139 for Riede, who is in Oregon for a
month visiting family before she heads to the University of Texas at El
Paso for graduate school. Kate Harper (Portland, Ore.) finished second
to Riede and was the only other person to finish under par with a two
day total of 69-74 – 143.
In the Men’s Open Division, which was also able to play 36 holes, John
Bartholomew (Wilsonville, Ore.) won with a total score of 6-over par
74-76 – 150, one stroke over the rest of the field.
