Did you know that the state of Pennsylvania
has held more USGA Championships than any
other? Merion and Oakmont may get most of
the accolades, but a beautiful Lehigh Valley
club called Saucon Valley has had the third
most USGA events in the state, with the 2014
Mid-Am being the 7th.
Saucon Valley will provide both qualifying
courses (The Old and Weyhill) to handle
qualifying, with match play being conducted at
The Old. And the 54-hole Saucon Valley CC
will still have one high caliber course left for
member play.
The names of the qualifiers below only tell
part of the story. That's because two of the
favorites are exempt players -- defending
champion Mike McCoy of Iowa and recent
U.S. Amateur quarterfinalist Nathan Smith.
Smith has an opportunity to win his fifth Mid-
Am, which would be the most in history. He'll
be playing in his home state of Pennsylvania
and he won't have to go up against players
that bomb it 350 yards like he did at the U.S.
Am.
In short, it's going to be hard to bet against
Nathan Smith doing it again.
Below is a summary of the results of 2014
