Round 1 Recap: Magnolia Amateur 2025
Grant Doggett of the University of Houston set the pace with a scorching 8-under-par 63 at Hattiesburg Country Club, seizing the solo lead in the opening round of the 14th Magnolia Amateur.
Doggett, a sophomore from Beach City, Texas, opened with a front-nine 31, highlighted by birdies on holes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8. He followed with a nearly flawless back nine of 32, adding birdies on 10, 13, 14, and 17. His lone blemish came with a bogey on the 9th. The 6'0" right-hander—coming off a breakout sophomore season that included a 4th-place finish at the Claud Jacobs Invitational—showed total control and maturity beyond his years.
Two shots back at 65 (-6) is Nicolas Dominguez, followed by a three-way tie at 66 (-5) between Peyton Russell, Jon Ed Steed, and Mason Lewis. A large pack of players sit tied at 67, just four back of the lead.
The field of 156 elite amateurs continues with Round 2 tomorrow, where cut positioning and team competition will intensify.
