PLYMOUTH, Mass. (August 19, 2014) --
Kevin Carey (South Dennis, Mass.) emerged
from a logjam of 4 players who shot 71 in the
first round to win the Inaugural Hornblower
Senior at Plymouth Country Club. Carey is a
solid player who again showed his skill in New
England golf. In 2012, he made it to the round-
of-32 at the USGA Senior Amateur.
In the final round, he fired 72 to post 5-
over 143 on the par 69 Donald Ross layout,
while Jack Kearney stepped in to grab second
with the lowest round of the tournament, a 1-
over 70.
With a full field of players, and the growing
demand for quality senior tournaments, the
inaugural tournament can be called a
resounding success. I spoke with Tournament
Director Mike Ellis after the tournament
concluded and he gave me the rundown on an
event which just turned 50, and why they
decided to create a Hornblower Senior:
Q: What can you tell me about
the history of the Hornblower Memorial?
A: The Hornblower itself reached 50 years
old this year. I have been involved for about
30 years and chairman of it for about 25 years.
My father started it and was chairman prior to
that.
Q: Why did you decide to run a
Hornblower Senior, and what gave you the
premonition that it might be so successful?
A: In all the years I’ve been there I have
seen a lot of the same faces; the players that
built this tournament into what it is now.
Unfortunately they are getting up in years like
myself and aren’t as competitive as they used
to be. They continue to play and we continue
to welcome them to the tournament but it has
been at the expense of the young guns coming
up that can really compete for the
championship. The older guys began to focus
on the senior division [which was previously
run simultaneous to the Hornblower Memorial]
so it hit me to separate them and make a
tournament just for them and that would open
up more spots in the regular Hornblower for the
up-and-comers.
Q: How do you feel the first year
went and how many players participated?
A: The reaction to the concept has been
fantastic. Numerous guys told me they would
play in the senior event and not the
Hornblower itself. I forced them to play in the
Hornblower one more year since it was the
50th and I wanted them to share in the special
year. When I pitched the senior event to the
BOD of Plymouth Country Club I promised them
80 players. The reaction was so strong I had
to go back to the president of the club to
expand it to 100 players. The applications
continued to poor in and ultimately we snuck in
120 players and still had to turn players away.
It was a raging success. We got all the best
seniors to come. The future for this
tournament looks great. The club couldn’t be
happier with the results. This event will be
around for a long time as long as the players
continue to come. We have even begun
talking about a Hornblower Four-Ball and a
Junior Hornblower.
Q: What about the players, the
winning score, and your par-69 layout?
A: Kevin Carey was solid as ever and beat
out Jack Kearney by one shot in the end. It
was a great battle down to the wire. We had
a nice crowd looking over the 18th green as
Kevin finished and locked up the title. Once
again the real winner was PCC and Donald
Ross. The winning score on our little 6300
yard par 69 was five over par. A special shout
out to our club superintendent Ben Whiting and
his staff for making the course perfect and to
AJ Petrulak and his staff for running a great
event.

The prestigious Hornblower Memorial now has a
senior division.
For years, the tournament played in honor
of Plymouth CC benefactor has been a staple
on the Northeast amateur golf circuit. This
year, a separate senior event was launched
and from the look of things it's off to an
amazing start.
Four players: Aram Hintlian, Kevin Carey,
Richard McCarthy, and David Houghton posted
2-over-par 71 to share the first round lead in

ABOUT THE
Hornblower Senior
Style of play: Two day - 36 hole stroke play – no
cut.
Handicap required: GHIN index of 8.0 or lower. Must
be
at least 55 years of age or older as of the start of
the
tournament. Super Senior division for those aged 65
and older. The Hornblower Committee will be
responsible for
acceptance or rejection of all entries.
