Duo of Nelson, Grant win by eight at Alabama Senior Four-Ball
Robert Nelson
ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (Oct. 12, 2014) — The team of Robert Nelson (pictured) and Walker Grant cruised to victory in the 20th Alabama State Senior Four-Ball at Willow Point Golf & Country Club in Alexander City after rounds of 63-66-64—193 left them 23-under-par and eight-shot victors over David Zauchin and Talbert Griffin III, who shot 70-65-66—201.
Birmingham's Doug Davis and Del Wood III finished alone in third after scores of 68-66-68--202.
This was Nelson's third state title and he has shown great longevity as he won the State Junior in 1978 and State Mid-Amateur in 2009, while it marks Grant's first State title.
"We played a very good final round, getting off to a good start (five birdies in the first seven holes), which set the tone for the day," Nelson said.
"For the majority of the day, we were both in each hole and that made it a little easier.
"I've played good at the state level for a long time and it's nice to know I'm still competitive. I'm really tickled for Walker to win his first state title."
"I've come close a few times (to a state title)," Grant said. "It's exciting to step over the edge and win one. I had a great partner. It was also nice to know we had a big lead and be able to relax a little and cruise in enjoying it. I've never had that happen before."
So, the championship is now in the hands of Nelson, who lives in Fairhope, and Montgomery's Grant, who is a member at Willow Point and has played the course a lot in the last 20 years, including winning their club championship four times.
This was the final Alabama Golf Association championship of the season.
