Will Zalatoris wins Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase
Will Zalatoris
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Wake Forest freshman Will Zalatoris shot 67 on Monday at Riviera Country Club, beating out 13 other collegiate hopefuls at the Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase.
He will make a PGA Tour start this week at the Northern Trust Open after winning the inaugural event by five shots. He was the only player to shoot under-par.
The event featured 14 college players playing alongside a current or former PGA TOUR pro from their respective school, as well as two other amateurs.
Alongside the collegiate competition, the PGA TOUR pro and two amateurs played best-ball for a chance to earn $50,000 for their school. That prize went to the University of Oregon as head men's golf coach Casey Martin and his partners shot 13-under 58.
Zalatoris had a spectacular 2014 summer, winning the U.S. Junior Amateur, Trans-Miss Championship, and Texas State Amateur. He'll be the fifth amateur to tee it up on the PGA TOUR this year, coming after Kyle Suppa at the Sony Open, Jon Rahm at the Phoenix Open, and Jake Knapp and Gunn Yang at the Farmers Insurance Open.
ABOUT THE
Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase
The Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase was
founded in 2015. It is a chance for collegiate players
to play with PGA Tour alumni from their respective
schools. Two simultaneous competitions take place:
In the individual competition, the collegiate players
will play their own ball to record an 18-hole score.
When the Collegiate Showcase was founded, the
winner experienced the excitement of playing in the
Genesis Invitational that same week at Riviera. With
the status of the Geneisis Invitational changed to
"elevated" the showcase changed to awarding a
playing spot in the
Genesis Scottish Open, a co-sanctioned PGA TOUR &
DP World Tour event played in July.
In the team competition, the professional and the
two amateurs (playing at a specified percentage of
their most current and verified handicap) will team
up to play a best ball format (one-ball). The low
Professional and Amateurs team will take home the
Champions Trophy for their school and a nice check
going to their university's golf program.
