Wingerd, McCready finish strong for Middle Atlantic Mid-Am Four-Ball win
PIKESVILLE, Md. — Billy Wingerd registered a birdie and two eagles in the final five holes -- and the team needed all of them -- helping lift him and partner Rusty McCready to a round of 34-31--65 and a one-shot victory in the 15th Mid-Am Four-Ball tournament of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association at Woodholme Country Club in suburban Baltimore, October 20.

They did not come close to a bogey in their 7-under-par tour and , in fact, were in every hole for birdie with the exception of the par-4 eighth where they settled for par. The Pikesville course was played at 6,607 yards to a par of 35-37--72.

Wingerd began the the back nine with a birdie at 10, then got hot down the stretch as he birdied the 14th, eagled the 521-yard 16th, and eagled the 490-yard 18th. McCready kept the round alive with pars on the other two holes. Wingerd's putts were eight feet at 10, three feel at 14, seven feet at 16, and 17 feet at 18, a curling, somewhat downhill "tester," considering the greens had a stimpmeter reading of 13.

Three groups later, Brian Simpson and Brandon Cigna registered 33-33--66, a round that featured eight birdies (four apiece). They were six under par for the first 14 holes, but cited two bad shots as costing them on the next two holes. At 15, they made "a bad bogey," and at 16, they made par on a hole they considered a birdie hole. They got back within one with a birdie at the 18th. Prior to stumbling, they had reeled off birdies on the four previous holes.

Among 30 teams, the only other round in the 60's was a 32-36--68 by the Baltimore CC entry of Brandon Luckett-Brett Williams. The latter birdied three holes on the front, two on the back, and there was one team bogey.

They were followed by three teams at 70, three at 71, and three at 72, Among the 72's was the Rolling Road GC team of Rick Sovero and Justin Jarvis and Jarvis helped their cause with an implausible eagle-3 at the 18th. He reached the back of the green in two shots and faced a really fast, downhill putt of 30 feet to a front position. He tapped the ball and it rolled down and fell into the cup.
