GARDEN ROUTE, South Africa (February 14, 2017) -- A first day 7-under 65 has sent Paul Margolis of France to the top of the Cape Province Amateur leaderboard. With two rounds remaining Margolis holds a one shot lead over South Africa's Brandon Cloete and last weeks South African Stroke Play winner, Robin Dawson of Ireland.
The Cape Province Amateur is being played on two different tracks and Margolis spent his first round touring George Golf Club. Margolis came flying out of the gates with three consecutive birdies as part of a bogey-free 5-under 31 front nine. Early on the back nine Margolis kept his stellar round going with three straight birdies from Nos. 10-12 to reach 8 under.
However, Tuesday wouldn't be a mistake free round of golf and Margolis slipped up a bit with 13th and 16th hole birdies before rebounding with an 18th hole birdie.
Cloete, playing at the George Golf Club as well, put together a five birdie, one eagle and one bogey round. The eagle came on the par-5 16th and it was the signature moment of a 6-under 30 homeward nine.
Dawson teed it up at the Kingswood Golf Estate and moved into a share of second place with seven birdies and one bogey. At one point in his round, Dawson carded five consecutive birdies from Nos. 3-7 and overall seven birdies in eight holes when the run is stretched out to the 10th hole.
Switzerlands Jeremy Freiburghaus is fourth at 5 under while Victor Veyret (France), Herman Loubser (South Africa) and Robin Williams (England) share fifth at 4 under.
