amateurgolf.com Monterey Bay: First Rd Results
SEASIDE, California (May 26, 2007) – Play got underway today in the seventh annual amateurgolf.com Monterey Bay Championship today at Bayonet Golf Course, which has recently undergone a renovation to the front nine. The tournament is historically significant to us - it was the first event in the amateurgolf.com Tournament Series, which is now 19 events strong.

In the Championship Division, Peter Israel of Santa Monica is tied with Freddy Wolfe of Piedmont (a member of the Cal Berkeley golf team) at 4-over 76. Most players in the field would agree that 76 on the brutal 7133-yard course was the equivalent of even par or better anywhere else. The average score in the Championship Division was well over 80.

In the Senior Division, defending champion John Enright of Montara is off to a strong start, firing a 3-over 75 from the slightly shorter 6789-yard blue tees. Dan Gray of Patterson was the only player to break par (net) in the Net Division – he posted a 71 to lead by one over Korsen Yu of Sunnyvale.

Course Notes:

* Players raved about the newly designed front nine on Bayonet, but deep rough, fluffy bunkers, and damp, foggy conditions sent scores north of par

* The toughest hole on the front was No. 2, where more than one score of 9 and at least one in double-digits was recorded.

* The “strong finish” award goes to Steve Donnelly, who managed to salvage an 80 by finishing birdie-birdie-birdie on the last three holes.

* Two-time defending San Francisco City Women’s Champion Diane Kwon of Fremont was in the field, posting an 80 from the crimson tees. “The course was really short for me from those tees, but I just didn’t have my game today,” said Kwon.

* It was a “rough day on rules” according to rules official Bill Biermann. At least seven rulings were required. The names have been removed to protect the innocent.
