PACIFIC PALISADES, CA (February 12, 2018) - Scottie Scheffler, a senior at the University of Texas, won the Genesis Open Collegiate Showcase on Monday, shooting a 3-under 68 at Riviera Country Club. With the win, Scheffler earned a spot in the PGA Tour's Genesis Open which begins on Thursday.

Scheffler, who was the low amateur at last year's U.S. Open at Erin Hills, was never seriously threatened by the other five competitors in the field. Playing in the first group of the day with Jordan Spieth, Scheffler carried a five-shot lead into the final hole and made an easy par to cap off the win.

Scheffler and Carl Yuan of the University of Washington both got off to under-par starts early in their rounds, but by the turn only Scheffler remained in the red, with Yuan losing three shots from the 6th through the 10th holes. The other four players all turned over par, and when Scheffler got it to 3 under by the 15th hole the tournament was practically decided.

"It will be awesome to be a part of this field (at the Genesis Open)," said Scheffler to the Golf Channel. "To be a part of the history of this tournament is going to be really special and I'm really looking forward to it."

This is the fourth year of the Collegiate Showcase. Previous winners are Will Zalatoris (Wake Forest) in 2015, Charlie Danielson (Illinois) in 2016, and Sahith Theegala (Pepperdine) in 2017.

After Theegala's win last year, he went on to make the cut in the Genesis Open, shooting 2-under to finish T49, while getting to tee it up alongside Phil Mickelson and J.B. Holmes.

ABOUT THE Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase

The Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase was founded in 2015. It is a chance for collegiate players to play with PGA Tour alumni from their respective schools. Two simultaneous competitions take place:

In the individual competition, the collegiate players will play their own ball to record an 18-hole score. When the Collegiate Showcase was founded, the winner experienced the excitement of playing in the Genesis Invitational that same week at Riviera. With the status of the Geneisis Invitational changed to "elevated" the showcase changed to awarding a playing spot in the Genesis Scottish Open, a co-sanctioned PGA TOUR & DP World Tour event played in July.

In the team competition, the professional and the two amateurs (playing at a specified percentage of their most current and verified handicap) will team up to play a best ball format (one-ball). The low Professional and Amateurs team will take home the Champions Trophy for their school and a nice check going to their university's golf program.
