Rickie Fowler did everything possible to attract the attention of USA Walker Cup Team Coach Buddy Marucci, except for making match play at the U.S. Amateur (he lost a playoff for the final spots at 147).
He was eventually tabbed as the youngest American Walker Cupper, and quickly proved to be a good selection, finishing the tournament at 3-1-0, with his only loss coming to Irish sensation Rhys Davies.
He has started 2008 strong again, becoming the first golfer ever to repeat as Sunnehanna Amateur champion, and making the cut at the U.S. Open in Torrey Pines, even enjoying a brief spot in the top-10 after carding an opening round of 1-under-par.
Fowler won the 2007 Sunnehanna in Johnstown, Pa., by one stroke, finishing at 8-under-par 272 for his four rounds. He followed with a win at the 2007 Players Amateur in Bluffton, S.C., where he was 24 under par for 72 holes. He also was a quarterfinalist at the 2006 U.S. Amateur.
At the Sunnehanna, he was in the 60s for three of the four rounds. At the Players, his four rounds in the 60s included a 63 and 64.
He also won the individual title at the 2007 Southern California High School Championship and the 2006 California State High School Championship, forgoing a chance to repeat in 2007 in order to play in the Sunnehanna.
He is currently a rising sophomore at Oklahoma State University.
