A steady final-round effort from Jason Bell and Jason Johnstone at Bandon Trails Golf Course at Bandon Dunes Resort was enough to catapult the pair from Canada to the top of the leaderboard. A final-round 74 left them with the title at 8 over for 72 holes.

Bell and Johnstone trailed by two shots at the beginning of the day, but by the end of it, were tied with third-round leaders Kyle Rector and Mason Mazzola. They won courtesy of their lower final-round score. Rector and Mazzola combined for a final-round 76 to reach their 8-over total.

For the week, the Canadian team’s best score came on a windy day at Pacific Dunes. The pair finished with a 1-under 70 in that third round, which set them up for the final-round charge.

Behind the two groups at 8 over, Jason Wood and John Krogh had the best final-round score in the championship division, an even-par 71 that left them at 9 over for the week and one shot out of it.

Sherman Haggerty and Ben Whipple

In the senior division, Sherman Haggerty won his fifth title alongside partner Ben Whipple. Haggerty has one of the longest track records in this event, having played the past 16 consecutive tournaments. The pair took advantage of calmer conditions and a more protected course in Bandon Trails, posting a closing 2-under 69 for a 2-over total. That left them with a two-shot margin of victory on Bart Thomsen and Todd Palmaer.

The net division ended with the father-son pair of Andrew Zacks and Simon Zacks on top. Simon, the younger Zacks, seemed to find his stride late week, and contributed two crucial net birdies on the final two holes as his team eeked out a win over Matt Browning and Tyler Shean, who were playing in the same group. The Zackses put up a final-round net 65 for a 10-under tournament score, while Browning and Shean brought in a net 66 to come up two shots short.

Over the course of 72 holes, the field played each of Bandon Dunes' 18-hole courses under cloudless skies. This was the 18th playing of the annual spring event.

ROUND THREE

After three days at Bandon Dunes, no more than two shots separate the top teams in all three divisions of the AmateurGolf.com Two-Man Links Championship. Gusting winds have been the great equalizer at the bucket-list resort on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Despite winds gusting as high as 40 mph Sunday on Pacific Dunes, Bart Thomsen and Todd Palmaer combined for the best gross score of the day, a 68 that moved them into a tie at the top of the senior division. The two are now 4 over, and neck-and-neck with second-round leaders Ben Whipple and Sherman Hagerty, who had 71.

Together with Charles Mazzola, AmateurGolf.com founder Pete Wlodkowski is 10 shots back.

After the day at Pacific Dunes, the championship division is also a lot closer than it started out. Mason Mazzola and AmateurGolf.com’s own Kyle Rector are working on a wire-to-wire victory, but on Sunday, the two teams behind them made up ground with rounds of 70. Rector and Mazzola combined for a 73 at Pacific Dunes, and their lead shrank from five to two.

In the net division, the father-son team of Andrew Zacks and Simon Zacks have the lead. The highlight of a net 68 was undoubtedly Simon Zacks’ near hole-out on the par-4 16th. The University of Oregon student’s drive stopped inches short of the cup and he tapped in for a net double eagle which amounted to a big momentum boost to end the day.

At 4 under, the Zacks team leads Matt Browning and Tyler Shean, by one shot.

The tournament concludes Monday with the final round at Bandon Trails.

ROUND TWO

As the AmateurGolf.com Two-Man Links moved from Old Macdonald to the original Bandon Dunes course at the so-named resort, a strong wind off the Pacific tested players mightily over the closing nine. Still, Kyle Rector and Mason Mazzola’s first-round lead not only held up, it grew. The California-based pair followed an opening 68 with a second-round 76 and now lead by five shots.

Behind the leaders, the teams of Joshua Correa-Wilson and Marc Engellenner and Anthony Adams and Scott Adams came in with 2-over 74. Both teams are 6 over and tied for second at the halfway point of the championship, along with Jason Bell and Jason Johnstone, who remain in second after rounds of 71-78.

In the senior championship division, first-round leaders Ben Whipple and Sherman Haggerty held their lead by following their opening 71 with a second-round 76. They are three ahead of Bart Thomsen and Todd Palmaer in second.

Matt Browning and Tyler Shean continue to lead the net division after an even-par 72. That kept them at 4 under, which is three shots ahead of the father-son team of Andrew and Simon Zacks. The third-place team of Cliff Stahl and Kurt Liss had an impressive 3-under 69 despite difficult playing conditions.

ROUND ONE

On a windy day at Bandon Dunes’ Old Macdonald course, one team managed to get under 70 and build a three-shot lead to start the AmateurGolf.com Two-Man Links Championship. The California-based duo of Kyle Rector and Mason Mazzola opened with 3-under 68 for a three-shot lead on the team of Jason Bell and Jason Johnstone.

AmateurGolf.com’s own Rector is two weeks removed from a top-5 finish at the SCGA Mid-Amateur. He contributed two of the team’s five birdies for the day. Mazzola contributed crucial birdies at Nos. 13 and 17 on the tougher back nine where wind picked up.

Bell and Johnstone remain within striking distance, and Johnstone helped the team’s cause greatly when he logged an eleventh-hour birdie at the par-4 18th.

The next-best team consists of Jason Wood and John Krogh, who combined for a 2-over 78. Krogh contributed both birdies for the team.

In the senior championship division, Ben Whipple and Sherman Haggerty combined for an even-par 71 that gave them a two-shot lead over Chris Bond and Michael Bond. The leaders combined for three birdies over the final five holes, but also had to count a bogey at the par-4 16th.

Matt Browning and Tyler Shean led the net division with a 4-under 67. Andrew Zacks and Simon Zacks are close behind with 68.
