If the golf world was paying attention, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur served as an excellent introduction to Zoe Campos, the petite Valencia, Calif., native whose game is blossoming this summer. Campos, 16, was tied for first with Jennifer Kupcho after the first round of the ANWA, and stuck around for a top-5 finish. After one round at the Canadian Women’s Amateur, another event loaded with some of the best women’s amateur talent out there, Campos has a share of the lead.
Campos, a UCLA commit, shares the top spot with Stanford star Andrea Lee, another Southern Californian. Both women opened with 66 at Red Deer G&CC in Alberta. Campos only had one bogey, on the par-4 ninth, and birdied her final two holes.
“I played really well, everything was pretty much on point. The course was pretty tough, though,” Campos said.
The teen said she did a good job of staying calm despite going low on Tuesday, and plans to keep the same gameplan for the second round.
Lee opened with 4-under 32, then added a 34 on the back.
Behind the leaders, three women are tied for third after a 4-under 68. Canadian Sarah-Eve Rheaume, of Quebec, is in that group, and so are California natives Ty Akabane and Brianna Navarrosa.
