Lara Tennant added another national championship to her résumé on Friday by winning the R&A Women’s Senior Amateur Championship on the third hole of a playoff. It is just the second time in the 25 years of the competition that a player from the U.S. has won the crown.

Toni Wiesner of Texas was victorious in 1997 at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire, England when the competition was known as the Senior Ladies' British Amateur Championship.

Tennant (74-73-75-222) finished tied with Alison Taylor of Ireland and Sylvie Van Molle of Belgium at 3-under par through 54 holes at the par-75 Royal St. David’s Golf Club in Wales. The trio embarked on a three-hole playoff – Nos. 1, 13 and 18 – with Tennant prevailing on the third hole.

An Oregon Golf Association member through Waverley Country Club in Portland, Tennant entered Friday’s final round two strokes back of Taylor who held the lead at 5 under (70-75-77-222). Van Molle (75-76-71-222) shot 4-under par in the final round to rally into a tie for the lead.

Tennant came up clutch down the stretch with birdies on No. 16 and 17 giving her an even-par finish for that culminating round. Her final round consisted of four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on No. 2.

Amy Ellertson, at 3 over, tied for fifth and was the only other player from the U.S. to finish in the top 10.

Earlier this year Tennant won her second consecutive U.S. Senior Women's Amateur crown and her third consecutive Oregon Senior Women's Amateur title.
