Kris Mikkelsen (Atlanta, Ga.) and Matt Sughrue (Arlington, Va.) were the mid-am and senior winners of the C.B. Macdonald Invitational ("The Singles") at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y.
Mikkelsen, a former Georgia Tech player, shot a 1-under 71 in qualifying to comfortably make the top 16 and get into the Championship match play bracket. He then won four matches en route to the title, dispatching Sean Barrett (22 holes), Trevor Randolph (4&3), medalist Bobby Wyatt (2 up), and 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up Joseph Deraney (19 holes).
Sughrue, the runner-up in the 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur, was the stroke play medalist with a 71. He then won his three matches, taking out Stephen Sherrill (6&4), former U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Mike McCoy (20 holes), and John McClure (6&5). In the match against McCoy, Sughrue was two up with four holes to go only to see McCoy win the next three to take the lead into the 18th. But Sughrue made an 8-footer to extend the match, and a 6-footer for birdie on the 20th hole.
