Amateur Golf Podcast: 2023 Coleman Invitational Champion Jeronimo Esteve
Jeronimo Esteve
Jeronimo Esteve recently
won the 2023 Coleman; it was in his words, “his biggest victory” and he joined us to share his thoughts on the event. He gives some incredible descriptions of holes and shots at Seminole that made my palms sweat.
Over the years, Esteve’s name has been at or near the top of some elite amateur leaderboards. From the Gasparilla to the Crump Cup to the U.S. Mid-Am and The Coleman, he enjoys the competition and gives some excellent insight into his mindset as he came down the stretch at Seminole battling Stewart Hagestad and Evan Beck. Recently, Esteve has also helped launch a Mid-Am event in the Dominican Republic. The Devil’s Elbow grants an exemption to the PGA Tour’s Corales Punta Cana Championship.
On how he got the nickname "Heavy Seve"
Arjun Atwal played on tour with him (Seve). He's the one that started that nickname. We were playing with this young kid, who's a great guy, and he kind of ran with it. I think Arjun had played with Seve several times and really idolized him. It was a compliment to me, you know? And being Hispanic, anything Seve is is actually a good nickname. So, I told him 'I don't mind it. I'm a happy fat guy.' I'm super cool with it.
On the razor thin margins at Seminole Golf Club
I'll never forget this. It's the second hole. And I'm playing with a guy who knocked it on the green and then putted it off the green into a bunker. He had no shot back at the green. So he had to hit a bunker shot down the fairway and then pitched it on and three-putted. And I was like, 'Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into?'
