After a decade of playing this televised championship on the shores of Lake Tahoe, Stephen Curry was ready to hoist the trophy. Thanks to a Saturday hole-in-one on the 152-yard seventh hole and, a 20-foot do-or-die eagle putt on the final hole, the legendary Golden State Warriors star is the champion of the American Celebrity Celebrity Classic. Did you see it?
With Mardy Fish almost assured of posting a total of 74 points after nestling his birdie putt to close range, The ball (ok, it's a golf ball, but you get the idea) was in Curry's hands. He rolled a beautiful putt that had those two key elements - pace and speed.
And then, just like he had done the previous day when he made the ace, he ran around the green in a scene reminiscent of Hale Irwin at the 1974 U.S. Open. High fives and all.
Curry, the Golden State Warriors All-Star guard and four-time NBA champion, received 6 points for the eagle, moving him to 75 points -- a single point ahead of former tennis player Mardy Fish.
Dallas Stars right wing Joe Pavelski found the water on No. 18, and finished in third place.
ON THE ACE:
“That was wild,” said Curry, who tossed his hat, sprinted to the green and slapped the flagstick before soaking in the crowd’s loud embrace. “It was good contact, right at the stick, but even if you’re painting the flag and it looks good, you never really expect it to go in.
ON THE FINAL PUTT AND CELEBRATION:
"I've always dreamt of a finish like that, on the 18th green in front of a crowd like that - to make a putt," said Curry.
Of his 150 yard sprint on Saturday after making a hole-in-one that millions have now seen, he added:
"You saw my celebration -- you know that's not what I do for a living."
