Florida Winter Series: Tim Cobb drains clutch putt to win in a playoff
Dubsdread Golf Course
Tim Cobb from St. Augustine carded rounds of 69-70 to achieve back-to-back 39 points on each day, bringing his total to 78 points and securing victory in the Mid-Am Flight. He clinched the title in a playoff against Troy Vanucci of Palm Coast at Dubsdread Golf Course in Orlando, Fla.
Cobb entered the final round trailing Mark Allen, who had four birdies and three bogeys in his first round, resulting in a tournament low of 41 points in the Mid-Am section. In contrast, Cobb registered two birdies against a bogey, placing him joint second with Jack Teegarden from Orlando. Teegarden shot a 72, featuring five birdies and seven bogeys, accumulating matching 39 points.
Allen from St. Petersburg struggled in the final round, managing to accumulate only 28 points following a dismal round of 79, finishing solo-fourth. Taking advantage of the opportunity was Troy Vanucci from Palm Coast, who matched the tournament low of 41, previously shot by Allen, tying the lead with Cobb at a total stableford points of 78 and forcing a playoff.
However, Cobb's 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole was enough to seal the deal and secure victory.
Cobb last secured victory in the JAGA Senior Amateur in September 2020, the oldest continuously played golf tournament in North Florida.
In the Senior Flight, Chad Ibbotson of Sanford totaled 72 points to emerge as the winner over John Barry from University Park and Matthew Avril from Vero Beach, both of whom accumulated matching 68 points to secure joint runner-up finishes.
In the Super-Senior Flight, Robert Cunningham of St. Cloud added 35 and 43 points over the two rounds to accumulate a total of 78 points, winning by three points over Bobby Lundqvist of Sanford, who finished as the runner-up with 75 points. Cunningham's second-round score of 43 points was the lowest in the tournament.
The tournament featured the participation of 92 players, with 23 in the Mid-Am division, 33 in the Senior division, and 36 in the Super-Senior division.
