OAKLAND, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2008)--Randy Haag showed why he is the top-ranked player in the
race by winning his second AGC event of the year, the Metropolitan Amateur, with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Haag topped Cal's Kent Yamane when he rolled home a 12-foot birdie putt after Yamane nearly dropped a bomb from 40 feet out.
"I hit a pretty good drive down the right side, I was only about 110 yards out but the pin was tucked in the back left," said Haag. "I hit a pitching wedge under the breeze and the distance was perfect, about 12 feet left of the hole."
Haag originally thought that he might have a chance to two-putt for victory, but after Yamane nearly sunk his 40-footer, rolling a foot past the hole for a sure par, he knew his birdie putt would have to fall.
"My putter was working for me on the back nine, I was 1-over on the front and shot a 31 on the back with eight one-putts," said Haag, who birdied six of the last ten holes. "Hit the putt dead solid, left edge, and it took a last second turn into the hole."
It was the second time Haag got the better of Yamane this year, the first coming in the semifinals of the San Francisco City Championship, which was eventually won by Martin Trainer.
Both golfers finished two days of play at the Metropolitan Golf Links at 9-under-par 135, eclipsing Matthew Garcia's tournament-record 136 posted in 2007.
First-round leader Anthony Machi, another Cal golf team member, took third at 136 carding a 1-under final round after a sterling 65 on Day 1. He was nearly a playoff participant, but missed a five-foot par putt on 18 to make it a threesome.
He still impressed the eventual champ by trading birdies with Haag down the stretch.
"I like playing with the younger kids, seeing what kind of shots they are trying, and I was really impressed with Anthony, he rolls the ball really well" said Haag. "I know he was upset with that last putt, but he'll be making plenty of those."
Andrew Biggadike was fourth at 137.
In the senior flight, Jim Williams pulled away from Tom Pera with a final-round 66, the best gross score of the day, and finished at 5-under 139. Pera and Robert Goodwin were the runners-up at 144.
Vincent Steele, the 2007 Net Player of the Year, won his second event of 2008 when he turned in a final-round net score of 65 for a total of 135. First-round leader Scott Carelli couldn't follow up his impressive first-round, where he carded a 63, carding a second-round 77 and finishing in second, five strokes back.
