Virginia Women's Team Matches: Elizabeth Manor wins
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Oct. 28, 2011) –– The six-golfer Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club team bested The Country Club of Virginia by 13 points (33½-20½) to claim Friday’s championship flight final at the 65th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s State Team Matches at James River Country Club.
In a matchup of the two low qualifiers for match play, top-seeded Elizabeth Manor took home its fourth title in the event, adding to the team’s triumphs from 2002-04.
Elizabeth Manor showed the depth of its lineup in besting three-time defending champion Mount Vernon Country Club to open match play on Thursday, before upending CCV, a 10-time victor in the event, in the final.
Based in Portsmouth, Va., Elizabeth Manor swept all three deciding matches in taking home the Nancy Hollenbeck Trophy. Portsmouth’s Cindy Morris and Chesapeake’s Kerry Johnson combined for a seven-point victory (12½-5½), while the Shelley Savage (Alexandria)-Cyndi Carlson (Chesapeake) tandem teamed for a five-point win (11½-6½). Virginia Beach resident Carol Robertson and Chesapeake’s Paula Stublen came away with a one-point victory, 9½-8½.
The Elizabeth Manor team kept the same pairings all three days, shot five under par in Wednesday’s stroke-play qualifying round and rolled through match play en route to the title.
“It all meshed the right way,” Morris said. Elizabeth Manor appeared in the championship final in 2005-06 and again last year.
Winners in the remaining flights were Broad Bay Country Club in the first flight, Meadowbrook Country Club in flight two and The Williamsburg Club in the third flight.
